We’d like to thank Joel from Florida for sending in a picture of what he says is, “My 9,400 LB rubber band ball, Megaton.”

Joel’s ball, according to various reports, is the largest one ever created and is featured in the 2008 Guinness Book of World Records. The rubber band novelty used to be hidden away under a tarp in Joel’s driveway. More than six feet tall, it contains around 700,000 rubber bands and is now owned by Ripley’s Believe it or Not.

This is a neat kind of project and highlights one more interesting way to make use of the rubber band. It is also a great rainy day task. If the weather has got you feeling a little low, start wrapping a few rubber bands around a crumpled up piece of paper or a minature ball. Keep wrapping until the bands are securely in place. Before long, you’ll find you have your very own rubber ball!

We’d like to thank Deborah O, the winner from our August 29th blog post. She will receive a free prize pack and Bandology T-shirt. Thank you for being here and participating in our “Stretch the Limits of Alliance Rubber Bands” contest!!  Remember to comment below!

A great way I use a rubber band is to keep my ceiling fan light fixture from rattling by adding a wide rubber band around the lip of the light fixture before I put the screws in. It works great! I also did this to my front porch light because the kids are always slamming the door! Lol

I bet his neighbors were/will be pretty happy to see that thing hauled off to Ripleys.

I remember making rubber band balls as a kid. I wish I knew where my old trusty ball went.... but this just takes it to another level.

And my niece thought her rubberband ball was big! Can't wait to show her Joels!

700,000 seems like an awfully low number of rubber bands for a ball that weighs over 9000 pounds. A bag of 1000 rubber bands would hardly weigh a pound, and would make a rubber band ball no bigger than a baseball.

Hi, Tim. I agree. I emailed Joel and asked him to share a few more comments about it. For one, I think he is using pallet bands, a larger industrial type rubber band. The reports vary as to the final size, but you can read more about it here: http://www.miaminewtimes.com/2009-11-05/news/lauderhill-s-joel-waul-cashes-in-on-his-record-setting-rubber-band-ball/

Thank you so much for comments. We enjoy having you with us.
