Entertaining Kids on a Budget

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

Let’s face it: Kids are expensive. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it will cost a middle-income couple an estimated $241,080 to raise a child born in 2013 for the next 18 years.

In a child’s early years, a lot of money goes toward toys. Luckily, we found a fun toy you can make with household items you likely already have in your kitchen! We went to the lab – the TinkerLab– and discovered the balloon yo-yo.

Your supplies:

  1. A funnel
  2. Uncooked rice
  3. 3-6 rubber bands

The process:

Step One: Wrap the balloon opening around the funnel. Then pour your rice into the balloon.

Step Two: Tie up your rice-filled balloon and wrap a rubber band securely below the balloon’s knot.

Step Three: Loop rubber bands together until you have reached the appropriate length for your child.

Step Four: Have fun!

Who says you have to pay to have fun? Your child will have fun playing with this resourceful creation, which is also a great tool for practicing hand-eye coordination.
