Alliance Rubber Company Partners With American Cancer Society To Help Cure Cancer

(Hot Springs, Ark.) June 7, 2012. Alliance Rubber Company, a leading global supplier of rubber bands, office and packaging supplies, recently sponsored a booth at the Relay For Life of Garland County Event, coordinated by the American Cancer Society. The event, held June 1-2 at the Oaklawn Jockey Club, raised more than $175,000 for cancer research.

“We wanted to honor past survivors that have worked for the company and our current survivors,” Shelia Kuhn, Alliance Rubber Company employee, said. “ This was our first year. We went in there blind, but we were pleased with the turnout. We now know more about what we are doing and hope to grow our team and raise even more funds in the years to come.”

As part of their fundraising efforts, Alliance Rubber Company sold bottle cap necklaces and earrings that were made by employees. They offered hot dogs, chips, and pickles at the event and vendors who workwith Alliance Rubber Company donated funds to help.

“Alliance will continue its fundraising efforts throughout the year in a variety of ways. We are going to host a luncheon for employees, a couple of bake sales, and we will continue selling our necklaces and earrings,” Kuhn said. “Our goal for this past year was $1,000 and we surpassed that. We are hoping to raise a lot more in the coming months.”

According to Donna K. Smith, community representative for the American Cancer Society, “That is an awesome amount for a first time team.  We think the fundraising efforts from Alliance Rubber Company have been amazing.”

Relay For Life, one of the primary fundraisers for the American Cancer Society, is one of 72 fundraisers in the state of Arkansas.“Garland County is the largest fundraiser in the state. We are thrilled to have Alliance Rubber Company on board,” Smith said.

Those interested in donating or getting involved areencouraged to contact Donna.Smith@cancer.org or via telephone at 501-760-2195.

“About 1,638,910 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the United States during 2012. In 2012, about 577,190 Americans are expected to die of cancer, more than 1,500 a day,” Smith said. “The five year relative survival rate for all cancers diagnosed between 2001 and 2007 is 67%, up from 49% in 1975-1977. The improvement in survival reflects both progress in diagnosing certain cancers at an earlier stage and improvements in treatment. These statistics will continue to improve due to the new treatments resulting from the research funded by American Cancer Society through fundraisers such as Relay For Life.”

Donations for Relay For Life can be made directly to the Alliance Rubber Team at www.relayforlife.org/garland.  Along with the Relay For Life event, Alliance Rubber Company sponsors a team with the Race For the Cure each year.

“Our employees are like family. A few of them are battling cancer or have battled it. We also have friends and family who are battling it as well,” Amanda Martin, Alliance Rubber Company employee, said.  “We want to be there to give them support or whatever they might need. It’s a great cause and we are so thankful to our employees like Pete Ferguson and Brian Rogers who helped make this possible and to everyone who helped us in our fundraising efforts.”

Along with the Relay For Life events, the ACS will be hosting a fundraising gala, themed: “Summer in Hot Springs: New Orleans Style” on August 18, 2012 at the Regency in downtown Hot Springs. The public is invited to attend.

“We are proud of our employees and the members of our extended business family for their efforts to help support the initiatives of the American Cancer Society,” Jason Risner, Strategic Marketing Manager for Alliance Rubber Company, said.
