The size #12 synthetic rubber bands provide smooth, stable operation of the tattoo machine needle, helping to prevent swaying during use. They ensure proper needle movement and are particularly effective with flat shading needles, which have an open-top tube tip. For consistent tension and to maintain hygiene, the rubber bands are replaced with each new tattoo.
Size #8 synthetic rubber bands are used primarily as a support item for piercing, but can also be useful on rotary tattoo machines.
